More than just a Plant Nursery in Lawrenceville Georgia

Petal and Pond, once Randy’s Nursery and Greenhouses began humbly in the parking lot of Great Gatsby’s Antiques on Peachtree Boulevard in Chamblee, where Randy Kucera sold tropical plants from a small pop-up tent. Encouraged by his early success, Randy expanded in 1987, relocating to Lawrenceville Georgia and officially naming the business Randy’s Nursery and Greenhouses. While his focus remained on tropical plants, including cold-hardy palms, he broadened the inventory to include perennials, shrubs, goldfish, and pond supplies.

After 24 successful years, Randy sold the business in 2011 to David Waters, who was operating a landscaping company at the time. David, seeking a venture that would blend his business degree and retail experience, took the helm and guided the nursery into a new era of growth. In 2019, the business introduced pond building and cleaning services, and by 2020, an agreement with a closed greenhouse operation in Monroe allowed the nursery to begin growing perennials. Over time, roses and shrubs were added to the growing program.

Since purchasing the nursery in 2011, we’ve wanted to change the name but struggled to find one that felt right. Aware of the confusion surrounding terms like “nursery,” “perennials,” and “water gardens,” we sought a name that would be simple, elevated, and approachable—without feeling exclusive. With our upcoming move, we decided it was time to seriously rethink the name. In 2024, the nursery embraced a new identity, rebranding as Petal and Pond to reflect its evolving focus and appeal to a new generation of plant and pond enthusiasts.

David is deeply passionate about bringing vibrant color to landscapes. He has a particular fondness for bright hostas, cheerful gerbera daisies, and the striking beauty of Goshiki koi. For him, a thriving garden nurtures physical, mental, and spiritual well-being while also supporting the environment. One of his favorite quotes, “Where flowers bloom, so does hope,” by Lady Bird Johnson, inspires his vision for the business. He hopes every plant, fish, piece of pottery, or fountain purchased from Petal and Pond adds a touch of lasting joy to homes and gardens.

David lives in Lawrenceville with his wife, Michelle, and their daughter, Anna. While Anna dreams of one day taking over the plant nursery in Lawrenceville Georgia, her current ambitions also include becoming a ballerina, veterinarian, or chef.
