Deadheading is a term that refers to a gardening technique in which you remove dead or fading flowers from plants in order to encourage new growth and more blooms. It’s essentially just pruning but is more specific and done by pinching or cutting the flower stems below the spent flowers and above the first set of healthy leaves.
Why is it important?
Deadheading is important and can be beneficial in many ways:
- Plant Appearance: Deadheading keeps plants looking vibrant and your landscaping looking fresh
- Health: Deadheading helps plants stay healthy by allowing them to focus on producing more flowers instead of seeds
- Extended Blooming Season: Deadheading can extend the blooming season by allowing new growth to come in later
